. Mix a glaze for the shadow halftone using an acrylic glaze (see Technical Notes) + Payne\'s gray + raw umber. Load a short pointed synthetic brush with the glaze, then use it to paint the lightest-value shadow halftones. Let dry.

3. Add second, third, and fourth applications of glaze for the shadow halftone, each slightly darker in value, using flat and pointed brushes of various sizes to obtain a translucent faded effect, as shown in the exercise on page 304. Since acrylics are used, each layer of glaze will dry very quickly; drying time can be reduced further by drying each layer with a hair dryer. When using acrylics, it\'s easier to paint five translucent layers for the shadow halftone than to try to subtly fade them in just two layers
