Jun 22, 2023 (posted viaProZ.com): Recently finished translating some excerpts from an Italian thriller into English, focusing on culture-bound items....more »
Ciao everyone! My name's Helen and, despite coming from a very monolingual background, I've always had a flair for languages! A native English speaker, I studied French and German for many years, going on to St. Andrews University where I added Italian. Italian soon became my true passion, and over the years I've been lucky enough to spend time living and working in Italy honing my language skills and, crucially, gaining a deeper understanding of what makes Italians tick.
I am a keen foodie, and if I'm not eating, I'm quite possibly reading about different foods. Indeed, reading is another love of mine, one which I dedicate as much time to as possible. These days I am just as likely to have my head in a new children's book as an adult one, joining my children on adventures to new places, meeting new people and learning about new environments.
I love the outdoors, am passionate about plants and creatures of all kinds, often discovering them whilst growing vegetables in my garden or walking the dogs in the Scottish countryside.
Since working freelance as a translator, proofreader and language tutor, I have been awarded a Masters in Translation from The Open University. My areas of specialism are Literature, Food & Drink, Textiles, Journalism and Environment & Ecology, though I will consider work from other fields. I offer flexibility and am often available to work evenings and over weekends, so please contact me if you're interested in a quote.
