I'm 1.57 miles away from having the amount of clients/work I want.

Nearly there... Mar 30, 2023

I’m fortunate enough to have built up a steady number of regular customers (though new ones are always welcome), but I’d love the workload wasn’t so irregular. We can’t have it all, can we?

I have enough work right now Mar 30, 2023

But my experience has shown me that you always need to be open to new (good) clients, since there's always a risk to lose even the best and most regular ones.

I am saying that, because over the past 10 years I've lost 3 (at that time) very best agency clients, due to acquisition.

I could have continued with the new owners, and I did for a little while, but their procedures were completely different and unacceptable to me.

So, you can never know, my advice is not to be too complacent.

Nothing's enough Mar 30, 2023

I lost enough money (or rather failed to make enough money) by working/slaving away as an in-house translator for nearly 10 years. So I got a lot to make up for. I wish I could clone myself...

Only ten? I took much longer!! I really wish I'd left after maybe five or so. But the time wasn't right, money was tight, and I couldn't take any risks, my kids were small and it's not like I'd have had any support from anyone. So my spin now is to simply make the most of my life as it is now.

To answer the poll, I'd say things were more or less perfect for me right now, I have plenty of interesting work, I can afford to turn down boring stuff and I'm earning enough that I have to make sure not to exceed the earning ceiling for the freelance status I have.

Can't really pick an answer Mar 30, 2023

My work volumes have been fluctuating wildly this year, though I am more than happy right at this moment.
However, I would wish for some more diversity when it comes to both agency and end clients.

No work Mar 30, 2023

I have not gotten any client yet, maybe they do not know what I can do.

'Nothing lasts forever...' Mar 30, 2023

I couldn't agree more with Yetta Jensen Bogarde. Things change all the time and clients come and go, for all sorts of reasons which we can't control. That's just life. So, I'm always open to new clients.

Close, but... Mar 30, 2023

I couldn't be happier with the amount of work I receive over and over again, but I don't think you can ever afford to say that you don't need any more clients. "Never put your eggs in one basket" and "first come, first served" are 2 wholy business principles that I rigorously apply.

Have you tried translating into your native language from modern/contemporary English?
I'd think you won't find that many clients in the IT field requiring English Middle (ca.1100-1500), but I'm sure you'll get lots of good marketing advice for English Middle if you asked in the getting established forum. Just a food for thought!
