If it’s for a client/agency that gives me regular work, I’m happy to occasionally translate/review a few lines of text, especially if the same client/agency has been accommodating in terms of prices and/or deadlines. In many cases, it doesn’t take any longer to look at the text than it does to explain why I can’t do it. I will not do it for agencies that I’ve never or rarely worked with. I have no rule about that. How much I will be willing to do for free depends on who is asking. Let’s start by saying that I haven’t been asked often. If a long-standing customer sends me a very small project, I will be willing to do it for free of my own accord. Over the years, I have also done some pro bono work. I have also translated for free a few documents for family members, several restaurant menus, recipes and a website for my youngest daughter. Some years ago, I collaborated on a tr... I have also translated for free a few documents for family members, several restaurant menus, recipes and a website for my youngest daughter. Some years ago, I collaborated on a translation (mostly reviewing) with one of my nieces, who is a medical doctor, for a very, very special price. I’m also the first port of call for my only translator daughter (the middle one), I feel she considers me as her private dictionary (not that I mind!)… ▲ Collapse | | | Barbara Carrara Italy Local time: 05:02 Member (2008) English to Italian + ... What are the provided individual figures supposed to be read as (words?, lines?, keystrokes?, paragraphs?, pages?, whole texts?, currency?), since the unit of measurement is missing? I'd be curious to know how those who have taken part so far interpreted the question. And more crucially, the options provided, as otherwise this would be a pointless poll.

When I was starting off in videogame localization, I translated some indie games pro bono – to help indie developers bring their game to a wider audience, and to add to my portfolio of projects completed. Also translating for NGOs that deal with things that I care about personally. But I wouldn't take on a big unpaid project in any case, probably. Where “big” is relative.

I assumed it was years and answered 201 or more, because I’m a generous soul.

Is this words or pages, or even 'laudas' (Brazilian official pages) or lines? In translation work I usually do a superficial review as a favoUr. Spell check then overview of the text. Full review with comments only if requested.
Only once as a favor. I was more than glad to do it for her because she and one of the other librarians were instrumental, and to a very great degree, in helping me get back into the translation industry, after a very long hiatus. The text was only about 10 lines long. Sadly, those special friends of mine, who are the same age I am, retired a couple of years ago, so I don't see or hear of them regularly. It's not the same there without them. But for sure, I wish them the very best and much happiness in their retirement. ▲ Collapse

When I read the question, I thought they were referring to the number of documents. But when I looked at the results, and about 11% each of the 3 highest categories were willing, I thought they must have a lot of free time and are financially free to do so! They should have clarified the question, as is the case in several of the polls. | | | It depends on who you are translating for... | Apr 25, 2022 |
In fact I often do it for ONGs and I am very proud of it, for me it is a way to donate and also a way to learn about translation and many other topics. Talking about clients, I do it for potential clients that when they need only a sentence to be translated for example, it is a nice touch to them so they feel happy and send me more projects.
