I am absolutely happy with almost everything about being a freelancer, except:
I envy those who do not need to think about work even for a second at weekends or holidays or mostly after 5pm!

How about "All of the above"?
And, as Oliver stated quite rightly, more time for CPD would be nice. As a technical translator, I miss visits to the factory and product orientations. When the occasional invite to a company's showroom comes along, I jump at the chance. And, trade shows are also nice opportunities to learn and talk to professionals about their products.
However, I wouldn't go so far as to say I "crave" all these things? "Would like" or "wished for" is suff... See more How about "All of the above"?

Getting steady orders after a while is less of a problem than having those steady clients paying steadily. Whilst I refuse work when slow payment becomes characteristic with a particular cleint, steady payment is what I would "carve" for. Hey, I do steady work, I should get steady pay!
And yes for the chocolate.

Steady workflow + interesting projects + constructive feedback + good rates = a contented translator.
If you add "prompt payment", a steaming cup of coffee and some fruit or candy to the mix, then these combined ingredients make one happy translator.

Most of the above, except for meeting collegues and leisure time, which I only feel the need for occasionally. I particularly like constructive or positive feedback, or even just acknowledgement of appreciation.

I no longer call or introduce myself as a 'freelance' translator. I read an article about it in a graphic design magazine a few months ago. In America at least, 'freelance' evokes lower fees and the notion that one does not do this (translation) as a professional full-time job.
Since any self-respecting professional wants to be respected, paid on time and given interesting projects to work on (otherwise, why accept just anything since we are independent professionals, right?), the bunch of options given as answers in this poll take the gold medal in the "Obvious Reasons a Professional Works Today."
Allison's remarks gave me a chuckle...yeah, chocolate would be nice to crave. Can poll authors revise their English word collocation knowledge, please? You can buy a Rogets' Thesaurus, for example, for a dollar or two.
I would have used "want" or "wish" instead of "crave." According to my trusty Visual Thesaurus, 'want' branches out to wish, wishing, require, need, desire, and a distant demand. Not even the word 'desire' yields 'crave' as a distant synonym. However (drum roll, please...), the word 'crave' has these immediate associations:
Hunger
Lust
Starve
Thirst
in one side of the spectrum, while pray, implore and beg are on the opposite side. The definition of crave: have a craving, appetite, or great desire for; plead or ask for earnestly; call upon in supplication; entreat.
Sorry, colleagues, but I don't "crave" anything in my profession. Take me to a supermarket and I might crave chocolate bars and mixed nuts however.
