Could hardly improve on that ... though now that my son is in the business too, we occasionally exchange or share jobs.
Only 2 customers have come through Proz, and only one of those still sends me anything. I didn't encourage the other, her rates were miserable so I was always "too busy" when contacted!

Almost all of my clients have found me. Most of them have come through Proz or other networks. I have also got a number of jobs through personal recommendations by friends and colleagues.

Most new clients find me (mainly through the Proz directory, but a couple have come to me on the recommendation of other agencies or translators).

Few jobs in my language pair get posted on Proz, and I rarely reply to any of those few offers. I have a couple of long-standing clients who found me via the jobs board a couple of years ago, but no recent ones that I can think of.

It all started with being part of an informal network of university friends and family (my brother and his wife, my husband and I all studied at the same university, more or less simultaneously) all in the translation business. Later the network extended to some clients/PMs.
In earlier days, friends would give my name and details to their clients and I would do whatever job needed to be done while my friends were unavailable (holidays mainly and/or weekends).

Later, I noted that a PM who leaves an agency to go work for another often takes “his/her” translators along.
Participating in social activities like congresses, seminars or conferences, or even forums and clients’ parties is another way to become visible.

Has been my approach these past several months.

I have beefed up my online presence at Proz and LinkedIn, and have frequently cropped up in searches, as indicated by the number of times I have been approached by new customers.
I also updated my CV so that potential clients could get a better view of who they would be dealing with, and, hopefully, preempt various questions and eliminate the need for the ubiquitous trial translation ...

I answered that they find me, but I only count "finding me" as emails I receive addressed to me personally, not mass mailings starting with "Dear Translator".

Sometimes through PROZ, i use the blueboard to find agencies. I rarely get jobs i bid for but will contact the agencies for future jobs.
I also use search engines and have found a number of agencies that way, and have also found new clients who saw me on LinkedIn and Freelancer boards (Pigiste quebec). Recently, I was referred by another client who sent someone my way for a revision job.

...I use marketing, incantations, prayer and the occasional blood sacrifice to an obscure deity to get clients.

On a serious note, many of my current clients find me through the American Translators Association's Directory.

Agencies are picking and choosing and looking for us, it means our product is sought after. In marketing terms our prices are too low!

It fits me, almost to the word, except that I also have clients that have been recommended by people who used to work for companies I translated for and who moved on to other companies, which have in turn sent me work.
