It is amazing the amount of work I manage to get through from 6 until the phone starts ringing at 9. These are my "money hours"!

4.30 Training Apr 17, 2010

I have to get up at 4.30 and leave at 5 to bring my son to his swim training. I am back at 6 and start working, and I agree with Vibeke: working without the telephone ringing is a blessing. But if he is not training, I usually work very late and get up at 9....

No matter what time I got up, I just cannot work in the afternoon/evening. When I'm very busy, I can manage a few hours, say from 2 til 5pm, but I much prefer getting up at 5 and working before the family wakes up. Those are my best hours, as Vibeke said.
Then I take the children to school, which is only 5 minutes away but normally takes no less than 30 min. to get there, say goodbye (I always have to stay for a few minutes with them) and coming back to work. Then I have 4-5 hours until t

Then I have 4-5 hours until they come back at 2 (fortunately, my phone does not ring very often and almost never for work-related issues. I hate the phone). And that's normally the end of my working day. There is no way I could work after dinner, like some people I know, I'm just too sleepy and would not be able to concentrate. And anyway, our bedtime is around 10pm.

During the week I get up at 6 am and check my emails first thing, so I can reply to all my European clients right away. Then I drop the kids off at school and head back to work until usually 1:30 - 2:00 pm, then its off to pick up the kids from school and usually after dinner I go back to work until who know when.

Being a freelancer is certainly a struggle and there is not such thing as 9 to 5.

My answer is somewhat deceptive Apr 17, 2010

I get up at 7-8 on working days in order to get my daughter to school. These are my 'working days' because I have less interruptions, but I am not naturally an early riser. I tend to stay up late at night so that I can get work done ahead of the next day.

Prefer to work during night times Apr 17, 2010

Hi,

I prefer to start work when everybody is slept and it's sure that no guests will be there to disturb.
When I start translation, I am drowned into the text to grasp meaning of each word and each sentence to convey it correctly in my languages.
However, I prefer to have morning breeze early at 5-6 A.M. in the morning if time permits. I do get the chances, when I have worked overnight and had to take chilling break....

Whenever I wake up and feel like getting up. The earliest I get up is about 8 am, but I usually get up some time after 9 and don't usually switch my phone on until 10 am (Spanish office hours).
Sometimes I may work until very late at night if I have a deadline. Today is Saturday, 20.30 in the evening and I'm working on a 6K job due Tuesday, so will probably stop about 22.00 and chill out a bit. I want to finish the job before Monday because I need to do the IVA on Monday and would like to

I don't have to worry about school runs or other parenting duties so could actually take a whole day off any time I felt like it... which is nice:)

maybe it's a Norwegian thing? Apr 17, 2010

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw how late people get up! I'm of Norwegian descent (50%) and I'm usually up between 5 and 6 (7 days a week), so maybe it's a Norwegian thing?!

The only exception is in the dead of winter, when the sun rises after 7. Then I usually sleep until first light. In a few weeks the heat will be intense here in Arizona, and I'll be getting up around 5 (if not before) so that I can get the dogs and me out on the trail for a hike before getting back to the computer.

I'm intrigued. If you get up that early, what time do you go to bed?? If I wake up at 6, I crash at half 10/11. If I'm Milan, I wake later and go to bed a LOT later. When I'm in Sicily, I wake up a lot earlier so I can go out walking/running before it gets too hot. I have to nap in the afternoon though otherwise I'm shattered - dinner is at 9/9:30...

Good poll Dalibor.

I chose "after 9 am..." Apr 17, 2010

...but "after 10 am" would be more precise. My best work hours are from 10 pm to 3 am. It's cool and quiet, with no phone ringing, and my husband is asleep. My brain is awake, juices flow, and I can concentrate completely. When I get sleepy, I go to bed; if needed, I take a nap in the late afternoon.

Our kids are grown and gone, so whenever life allows me, I work the hours that suit me.

Up at 7 Apr 18, 2010

As long as I can remember, I'm up by 7 am.
Then I spend about an hour getting ready, and then spend another hour checking news and websites.

My intentions to get up early don't seem to work out too well... Apr 18, 2010

I had this idea that I wanted to get up early, before 7 a.m., maybe go over to the beach before work for a bit, etc., etc. Well, it was a lovely idea, but I don't seem to be able to pull it off. I guess I'm just a night owl, maybe from so many years of play in jazz clubs! I can't seem to get into bed before midnight, and then I usually lie there awake, sometimes for a couple of hours. I might wake up at 8:30 a.m., but then I lie in bed for awhile and usually doze off again! I haven't really work... See more

Norwegian night owl Apr 18, 2010

I'm half Norwegian, too. But I'm more like Amy.

I do my best work at night when there are no interruptions, so I have a sleep deficit if I don't sleep late in the morning.
