It woulda been much more interesting to learn about individual amounts spent below $ 500. It really makes a huge difference whether you spend USD 220 a year for an SDL support contract like I do or upgrade only every three years, paying, say, that amount, which after all is just USD 73 a year.
Other than that, I would like to know what the roughly 6 % spending more than $ 500 a year actually do with the money. Do they buy newer versions of the same CAT tool instead of upgrading... Never touch a running system!!
I only upgrade when absolutely necessary and I nver want to be the first one to try out new software, irrelevant if Trados 2009 or Across 5.
I will have to upgrade to Trados 2009 soon, but that is also only a small amount. Trados support contrac twas the biggest waste of money I had invested!!

Where's the "nothing" button? I have had a CAT program (DejaVu) since 1999, and I have used it just about every working day since then (i.e. almost 300 days a year, every year). I paid the full price for it then, and I have only once paid an upgrade fee (about 6 years ago). Otherwise I have never been asked to pay anything to Atril.

I spent about 700 euros this year, and therefore voted 500-900, but I don't intend to spend that (or anything for that matter) every year. As somebofdy else said, I only update when absolutely necessary.

None. I have been working with Idiom and SDLX for years now - the Lite versions. Works beautifully and I never paid a cent.

None. I bought Trados about 6 years ago but haven't used it very much because the work I do is quite nuanced and I don't translate the same word the same way every time.
