Dura sconfitta per Rutelli, trionfa l'esponente del Pdl. La Provincia resta al centrosinistra
ROMA - Il centrosinistra riesce a conservare il controllo della Provincia di Roma, ma cede quello del Campidoglio. Gianni Alemanno, che già due anni fa aveva corso per la poltrona di sindaco sfidando Walter Veltroni e non aveva centrato l'obiettivo, sarà il nuovo sindaco di Roma. A spoglio ultimato, i dati parlano chiaro. E assegnano a lui un vantaggio di quasi sette punti (53,7% contro il 46,3%), sul suo antagonista, Francesco Rutelli. Il centrosinistra manterrà invece la guida della Provincia: a Enrico Gasbarra succederà il ds Nicola Zingaretti che con il 51,78% dei consensi ha battuto il forzista Alfredo Antoniozzi, fermo al 48,22%.
«SARO' SINDACO DI TUTTI» - Poco dopo le 18, con lo spoglio quasi ultimato, è stato lo stesso Alemanno ad intervenire per ringraziare gli elettori: «Quando si vince bisogna essere generosi - ha detto -. Ci lasciamo alle spalle tutti i veleni di questa campagna elettorale. Voglio essere il sindaco di tutti i romani. Vedo dalle percentuali che mi è stato dato un voto trasversale e ne terrò conto». Dall'analisi dei dati, sembra infatti evidente che diversi romani abbiano votato per Zingaretti alla Provincia e per Alemanno al Comune. Stando ai dati riportati dal sito del Comune di Roma, per Zingaretti hanno espresso il loro consenso 731.163 romani, garantendo al diessino il 50,95% dei voti espressi per la provincia nelle sezioni della sola capitale; per Rutelli hanno invece votato «solo» in 676.472: nella stessa giornata, insomma 54.691 elettori hanno insomma voltato la faccia al vicepremier. «Eravamo convinti di poter vincere - aveva spiegato poco prima il portavoce di Alemanno - ma questo distacco è superiore alle nostre previsioni».
FESTA NELLE STRADE - Dentro e fuori la sede del comitato elettorale dell'esponente di An, in via Salandra, già prima di cena si sono registrati assembramenti e caroselli di sostenitori esultanti. Fra le auto che transitano suonando il clacson sono stati notati anche diversi taxi, i cui titolari festeggiano le sconfitta della coalizione che nell'ultima consiliatura aveva provato a varare un provvedimento sulle liberalizzazioni delle licenze che era stato vigorosamente contestato dalla categoria. Sul successo di Alemanno è intervenuto anche il leader di An, Gianfranco Fini, secondo cui quella scritta con questo risultato elettorale è una «pagina storica per An», la sua «vittoria più bella».
L'AFFLUENZA - Intanto sono arrivati al Viminale i dati definitivi relativi all'affluenza: a livello nazionale è stata del 54,99% per le Provinciali e del 62,5% per le Comunali. Si è registrato mediamente un crollo di circa venti punti percentuali rispetto al primo turno, quando i votanti oscillarono tra il 74 e il 76%. In quell'occasione, però, si votava anche per il rinnovo del Parlamento nazionale e questo ha sicuramente favorito l'afflusso.
VALENZA NAZIONALE - Il responso elettorale nella Capitale ha anche una valenza nazionale. In caso di sconfitta, infatti, per Alemanno era già previsto un recupero nella squadra del nuovo governo Berlusconi. Resta ora da vedere cosa farà Rutelli: si è parlato per lui anche di un possibile ruolo da presidente dei senatori del Pd (anche se Veltroni ha già chiesto di confermare in questo ruolo Anna Finocchiaro) ma resta da verificare se, dopo il risultato di Roma, vi saranno contraccolpi interni al Partito democratico. Anche perché la poltrona che andrà ora ad occupare Alemanno è proprio quella lasciata libera da Walter Veltroni che ha rinunciato al Campidoglio per occuparsi a tempo pieno del Pd e, soprattutto, della campagna elettorale.
GLI ALTRI ENTI AL VOTO - Oltre che per Roma e per la sua provincia, si è votato anche per altri quattro consigli provinciali (Massa Carrara, Asti, Foggia e Catanzaro) e per 44 comuni, tra cui sette città capoluogo di provincia ( Sondrio, Vicenza, Massa, Pisa, Roma, Viterbo, Udine).

ROME – The centre-left has managed to maintain control of the Province of Rome, but has lost its power in the municipal elections. Gianni Alemanno, who unsuccessfully ran for the same post against Walter Veltroni in 2006, will be the new Mayor of Rome. The election results are clear, showing Mr Alemanno with more than a seven-point lead over his rival, Francesco Rutelli (53.7% to 46.3%). However, the centre-left has maintained control over the province, where Enrico Gabarra will be succeeded by Democrats of the Left (DS) candidate Nicola Zingaretti, who beat Alfredo Antoniozzi of Forza Italia with 51.78% of the votes to 48.22%.
“I’LL BE EVERYONE’S MAYOR” – Shortly after 6 p.m., when the count had almost been completed, Mr Alemanno thanked voters: “A winner needs to be generous. Let’s leave all the venom of this electoral campaign behind us. I want to be the mayor of all Romans. The results show that I achieved a cross-cutting victory, and I won’t forget it.” Indeed, data analysis shows that many Romans cast their votes for Mr Zingaretti in the provincial elections and Mr Alemanno in the municipal ones. According to the figures published on the website of the Municipality of Rome, 731,163 citizens voted for Mr Zingaretti, securing the DS candidate 50.95% of the provincial vote in the electoral divisions of the capital alone, while “only” 676,472 voted for Mr Rutelli on the same day. In short, 54,691 voters turned their backs on the exiting deputy prime minister. “We were convinced that we could win,” a spokesman for Mr Alemanno explained earlier, “but the lead that we actually achieved was greater than we had expected.”
DANCING IN THE STREETS – Crowds of rejoicing supporters gathered inside and outside the National Alliance (AN) candidate’s electoral committee headquarters in Via Salandra. Several taxis were seen among the cars honking their horns, as their drivers celebrated the defeat of the coalition that had tried to pass an ordinance to liberalise licences, which had been hotly contested by the sector. AN leader Gianfranco Fini also commented Mr Alemanno’s success, describing the outcome of the vote as an “important page in the history of National Alliance” and the party’s “finest victory”.
TURNOUT – Final turnout figures are in, standing at a national average of 54.99% for the provincial elections and 62.5% for the municipal ones. These figures reveal an average drop of 20 points compared to the first ballot, where turnout hovered between 74 and 76%. However, on that occasion voting was also for the replacement of the Italian Parliament, which certainly attracted more voters.
NATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE – The electoral response in Rome has nationwide implications as, had he been defeated, Alemanno would have been asked to join the new Berlusconi government. It remains to be seen what Rutelli will do now. There has been talk of his possible leadership of the senators of the Democratic Party (PD), although Mr Veltroni has already asked that Anna Finocchiaro be confirmed in this position. Nevertheless, the possible repercussions of Rome’s election results within the PD must be weighed. Indeed, Mr Alemanno’s new post is the one vacated by Mr Veltroni, who left the Senate to dedicate all his energy to the PD, and particularly to the electoral campaign.
OTHER ELECTIONS – In addition to the Municipality and Province of Rome, elections were also held for four other provincial governments (Massa Carrara, Asti, Foggia and Catanzaro) and for forty-four municipal ones, including seven provincial capitals (Sondrio, Vicenza, Massa, Pisa, Rome, Viterbo and Udine).
