Texte source - anglais Ένα κοπάδι αστέρια
Το μεγάλο βουνό, άπλωσε πάλι την επιβλητική σκιά του, εκείνο το βράδυ της παραμονής του Δεκαπενταύγουστου, πάνω στα μισοσβησμένα φώτα της μικρής μου πόλης. Σε λίγες ώρες, θα ξημέρωνε της Παναγίας, εδώ στο μικρό εκκλησάκι της Κοίμησης της Θεοτόκου στην Παιανία.
Ο Υμηττός, λίγο πιο πίσω, μακρύς, ψηλός και μισόγυμνος από δέντρα, να σε κάνει να σταματάς το βλέμμα σου, πάνω στα λευκά του μάρμαρα, στα μικρά πευκάκια και στο φωτισμένο δρόμο του σπηλαίου. Έπειτα, να ανεβάζει τη ματιά σου λίγο πιο πάνω ... κι ακόμα λίγο ... και να αγγίζεις τον ουρανό.
Έτσι ήταν κι εκείνο το βράδυ, που συνέβησαν όλα αυτά που θα σας πω ... και μάρτυράς μου η Παναγιά, που την έχω και γειτόνισσα, αν δεν συνέβησαν στ’ αλήθεια ...
Εκεί λοιπόν, λίγο πιο πάνω απ’ το βουνό, μαζεύονται τις νύχτες κάτι περίεργα λαμπιόνια, που ο κόσμος τα λέει αστέρια ! Είναι πολλά, πάρα πολλά, αφήστε που είναι και σαματατζίδικα ! Όλο μικρές φωτιές σκαρώνουν ... τσακώνονται μεταξύ τους ... για το ποιό θα φουντώσει τη μεγαλύτερη ... και δεν αφήνουν τη νύχτα ήσυχη να χαρεί τα σκοτάδια της !
Όταν δε, ανάψουν για καλά τα αίματα, πέφτει τέτοιο σπρωξίδι, που γκρεμίζονται και μερικά απ’ τα μπαλκονάκια του ουρανού ... και σκάνε απάνω στα μάρμαρα του Υμηττού, βογκώντας ...
Κάτι τέτοιο πρέπει να συνέβη κι εκείνο το μεσονύχτι της παραμονής. Η απρόσμενη Αυγουστιάτικη μπόρα, μόλις είχε κοπάσει κι ακούγονταν μόνο τα κελαρύσματα από το βιαστικό νερό, που είχε πλημμυρίσει την κοντινή μου ρεματιά. Από το ανοιχτό παράθυρο, μπαινόβγαινε το άρωμα από το βρεγμένο χώμα κι απ’ το ανθισμένο μου γιασεμί....
Δεν είχα κοιμηθεί ακόμα, όταν άκουσα να χτυπάει το κουδούνι και κάποιους περίεργους θορύβους στην πόρτα.
• Ποιός είναι ;
ρώτησα με απορία μα και με ενόχληση γιατί τέτοια ώρα μόνο επισκέπτες δεν ήθελα.
• Με συγχωρείτε....Εδώ δεν είναι η οδός αγάπης;
Μια φωνούλα δειλή ..Παιδική ; Τι στην ευχή; Κατάφερε άνθρωπος να μπει στην αυλή χωρίς να τον δαγκώσει ο Αίολος; Αυτός δάγκωνε ακόμα και τα μυρμήγκια. Άλλο πάλι και τούτο..
• Εδώ είναι ..μα ποιο νούμερο ζητάτε ;
• Δεν ξέρω το νούμερο ..Με έφερε ένας φίλος. Μου ανοίγετε παρακαλώ ; είμαι τραυματίας ...-- μου απάντησε.
Ανησύχησα πολύ. Τραυματίας στη μικρή μας πόλη που ήταν πάντα τόσο ήσυχη και ειρηνική; Άνοιξα την πόρτα, μα δεν είδα τίποτε. Μόνο ένα αχνό φώς, εκεί στη γλάστρα με το γεράνι, πηγαινοερχόταν σαν μικρό ξωτικό.
• Τι είσαι εσύ καλέ ; -- ρώτησα
• Αστέρι είμαι ... – μου απάντησε ξεψυχισμένα
• Και πως βρέθηκες εδώ ; Έβρεξε η μπόρα αστέρια και γω δεν πήρα είδηση ; -- ξαναρώτησα ...
• Είναι μεγάλη ιστορία ομορφούλα ... Μπορείς να με φροντίσεις ; Έχω χάσει πολύ φως ... – απάντησε.
Για να με λέει ομορφούλα ... αγόρι πρέπει να ήταν ... Κι ήταν και τσαχπίνης ... ήταν κι αστέρι ... ήταν και τραυματίας ! Α βρε μπλεξίματα νυχτιάτικα ... Και πως φροντίζουν τα τραυματισμένα αστέρια ; ... απόρησα.
Κοίταξα το δρόμο, την αυλή, τα σκαλοπάτια. Πρέπει στ’ αλήθεια να είχε χάσει πολύ φως ... Παντού σταγόνες από λάμψη ... Μέχρι και το πόμολο της αυλόπορτας, είχε σημάδια του τραυματία ... Το άμοιρο ! Τι τούλαχε ! Κι ήταν και τσαχπίνης ....
• Γιααα ... έλα μέσα, να δούμε πως θα σε βολέψουμε τώρα ... Δεν έχω ξαναγιατρέψει αστέρι – του είπα.--Πάλι καλά που δεν σε πήρε χαμπάρι κι ο σκύλος μου ο Αίολος, να σε κάνει με τα κρεμμυδάκια ...—
• Αχ ! αχ ! – βόγγηξε – Τον ξέρω το σκύλο σου... γνωριζόμαστε ... αααχ.. αυτός με κουβάλησε ως εδώ.--
Τον κοίταξα σαν χαζή ... Για δες βρε ... γνωριμίες ο σκύλος μου ...! Μέχρι κι αστέρια ξέρει !
• Και τώρα που είναι ; Που πήγε ο κοσμοπολίτης;
ρώτησα, ψάχνοντας με το βλέμμα την αυλή, μήπως δω τον Αίολο να μου ξεφορτώνει καμιά καινούργια συμφορά ...
• Πήγε ως τη ρεματιά να ξεπλυθεί, γιατί καθώς με κουβάλαγε στην πλάτη, τον γέμισα φως τον άμοιρο ...
Τι ... σκύλος κι αυτός !.... – σκέφτηκα – Δεν μου έφταναν οι φίλοι του που τους έφερνε στην αυλή μας κάθε μέρα ... τώρα, μούφερε κι αστέρι ... και τι αστέρι ; ... τραυματισμένο !
Χώρια που την προηγούμενη νύχτα με είχε αφήσει άυπνη. Ο απερίσκεπτος. Κυνήγησε τα μικρά κουκουβαγιόπουλα που είχαν καθίσει στο φράχτη της αυλής κι αυτά αντί να τρέξουν στη μάνα τους, ορμήσανε στην κάμαρά μου και τυλίχτηκαν με τα σεντόνια μου....
Όχι πως με πείραξε, μα με άφησαν άυπνη τα σκανταλιάρικα ως τα ξημερώματα , γιατί καλοστρώθηκαν στο κρεβάτι μου και παίζανε κρυφτό ... Και με κοίταζαν κι όλη την ώρα με κείνες τις κίτρινες ματάρες ... σαν να μου έλεγαν , δικό μας είναι το κρεβάτι ... κι εσύ κοιμήσου στo πάτωμα… Το πιο φιλότιμο απ’ όλα, κοιμήθηκε στη δορυφορική κεραία. Δεν μου ξεπουπούλιασε βεβαίως τα μαξιλάρια..μα ροχάλιζε σαν ιπποπόταμος ..
Απόγνωση δηλαδή ..στριμωγμένη δίπλα στη ντουλάπα..να κρατάω με το ζόρι τα μάτια ανοιχτά ως το πρωί. Κι η μάνα τους βολεμένη στην καμινάδα ούτε που νοιάστηκε να ψάξει τα μωρά της..
Βέβαια, ο Αίολος κυνήγησε τα μικρά της, επειδή ήθελε να προστατέψει τα δικά του παιδιά … Εννέα κουτάβια παρακαλώ φρόντιζε ο στοργικός πατέρας !
Αμέ !! …
Ούτε ένα …ούτε δύο … κι όλα στην αυλή μας .. Εκεί ! …Να σκάβουν λαγούμια στα θεμέλια του σπιτιού.. να αναποδογυρίζουν τις γλάστρες …να ξεριζώνουν τα λουλούδια
Ας το καταπιώ ..Ας πω πως με βοηθούν στο βοτάνισμα ! Μα ούτε τις τσουκνίδες δεν χαμπαριάζουν ; Μόνο τα δικά μου χέρια γίνονταν τούμπανο από τη φουσκάλες; Ευτυχώς είμαι γιατρός και φασκιώνομαι με τις μολόχες.
‘’’Αχ ... τι τραβάω ώρες - ώρες ...! ‘’-- αναστέναξα κι άνοιξα διάπλατα την πόρτα για να περάσει ... ο τραυματίας ...
Μπήκε στο σπίτι παραπατώντας κι έπεσε εξαντλημένο στον καναπέ. Παντού σταγόνες από φως ... Στο πάτωμα, στο τραπεζάκι, στη μικρή κουκλίτσα που ήταν θρονιασμένη στο βελουδένιο μαξιλάρι ... Ωχ ! και μόλις είχα τελειώσει το καθάρισμα ...
• Έχεις όνομα ; Πως σε λένε ; -- το ρώτησα
• Δεν με ονοματίσανε ακόμα, είμαι πολύ μικρός ...— είπε
• Χμ ... και ούτε θα σε ονοματίσουν ... — του είπα -- γιατί καθώς βλέπω ... τόφαγες το κεφάλι σου ! Τέλος πάντων ... Να σε ονοματίσω εγώ ; Να γίνω η νονά σου;
• Η νονά μου; Να μου δώσεις εσύ όνομα δηλαδή;
• Ναι.. να σε ονομάσω ... για να σκεφτώ λίγο, χμ ... Ιάσων !! Τι λες ; Σ’ αρέσει ; --
είπα ... κομπάζοντας μέσα μου, με την ιδέα πως θα γίνω η νονά ενός αστεριού ..
• Ποιός Ιάσων ; ! ... Εκείνο το μονοσάνταλο ; ! ... που άρπαξε το χρυσόμαλλο δέρας ; ! – με ρώτησε με έκπληξη ...
• Αααα ! ... Έλα Παναγιά μου που σ’ έχω και γειτόνισσα ! ... Που τα ξέρεις εσύ όλα αυτά καλέ ; ... ! ... Ξέρουν τ’ αστέρια μυθολογία ; !
• Εσείς οι άνθρωποι όταν λέτε μυθολογία ..εννοείτε πως όλα αυτά δεν είναι αλήθεια;
• Εσείς τα αστέρια όταν λέτε μυθολογία εννοείτε πως όλα αυτά είναι αλήθεια;
Με κοίταξε λες και το έδερνα ..
• Τι μυθολογία ομορφούλα ; Εκεί ήμουν ... και το ’δα το λεβεντόπαιδο !
Έξυσα το κεφάλι μου..Αμηχανία; …Εκεί λέει ήτανε … και τον είδε το λεβέντη … Αν είναι δυνατόν ! Μάλλον θα την έφαγε άσχημα όταν έπεσε … και τώρα μού έλεγε ανοησίες …
ΕΕ..δεν άντεξα
• Πότε γίνανε ρε πιτσιρίκο ; Εσύ είσαι τόσο μικρός ... αβάφτιστος ... και μου λες πως ήσουν εκεί;
• Ααααα ... !!! Δεν καταλαβαίνεις ομορφούλα !... Εμάς τ’ αστέρια, περνάνε χιλιάδες χρόνια για να μας δώσουν όνομα... ! Για πεταλούδες μας πέρασες ; ...
• Γιατί καλέ ; τι έχουν οι πεταλούδες ; ...
• Ααααα ! ... Είσαι κι αδιάβαστη ! Βρε ... οι πεταλούδες ζούνε πολύ λίγο ... ! Εεεεε ... μα τον Κρόνο ..! σε άσχετη έπεσα ; !
Κατάπια τη γλώσσα μου ...
Ένα μικρό τραυματισμένο αστέρι, με μάθαινε εντομολογία και μαθηματικά ...! Σώπασε για λίγο στοχασμένο και απλώνοντας αργά το αχνό φως του προς το μέρος μου, είπε σοβαρά :
• Οι νονές που βαπτίζουν αστέρια, πρέπει να είναι μορφωμένες ... κι εσύ ... δεν είσαι ... ! Μπα ... άσε το βάπτισμα ... καλύτερα να γίνεις το κορίτσι μου ...
Αμάν !!! ... Για κοίτα ... ρε έρωτες ο μικρός τραυματίας ! Εκεί που ψυχορραγούσε ... ήθελε και κορίτσι ... Άααα ρε γλέντια !!! Έβαλα τα γέλια ...
• Εγώ ... φωτορραγώ ... κι εσύ γελάς ... ! – είπε θυμωμένο κι έσβησε για λίγο ...
• Εντάξει ... εντάξει – είπα – πες μου πως να σε γιατρέψω ... και τέλος πάντων ... τι έγινε ; πως τραυματίστηκες ;
• Είχαμε πόλεμο απόψε – είπε σκεπτικό
• Τι ... πόλεμο ; Τον πόλεμο των άστρων ; ... – μου ξέφυγε και μούρθε πάλι να γελάσω ...
• Όχι, μας επιτέθηκε ένα σύννεφο
• Δηλαδή ; -- ρώτησα με αμφιβολία ...
• Δηλαδή ... εκεί που ανάψαμε για καλά τις φωτίτσες μας ... νάσου κι ο μάγκας ! ...
-- Φύγετε !!! – μας λέει ..!
– Γιατί ρε φίλε ;;; !!! --- του λέμε -- φύγε εσύ !! τράβα πιο κάτω ... !!!!
-- Άααααντε ρε ... φύγετε – μας ξαναλέει ... κι άρχισε να μαυρίζει απ’ το κακό του ... και κάνει και μία έτσι ... και μας αμολάει και μια μπόρα πάνω στις φωτιές ..!! Εεεε ... καταλαβαίνεις ... έγινε χαμός ! Ήρθανε κι άλλα σύννεφα ... έφεραν και κάτι κεραυνούς ... και μας έκαναν σκόνη ...
Το κοίταξα απορημένη. Μα επιτίθενται τα σύννεφα στ΄ αστέρια … αναρωτήθηκα μέσα μου ……….
• Μπα ;;; ... κι εσείς τα αστέρια ήσασταν μόνα σας ... .. τι στην ευχή !!! ...;;; δεν είχατε συμμάχους ;;
• Τι συμμάχους ;
• Ε πως; ολόκληρος ουρανός ... κοπάδια τα αστέρια ... και σας έκαναν σκόνη δυο σύννεφα ;;; .... και το φεγγάρι δεν είναι με το μέρος σας ; -- ρώτησα απορημένη
• Τώωωρα ... κάτι μας είπες ... Καλά λέω εγώ πως δεν το κατέχεις το πράγμα ... Βρε κορίτσι μου, το φεγγάρι, μέχρι και με τη νύχτα τα βάζει ! Έχεις δει εσύ ποτέ, αστέρια και φεγγάρι να’ ναι κολλητοί ; ... Εκεί να δεις κόντρες ! Μαζευόμαστε όλα μαζί να παλέψουμε το φως του ... και όλο μας εξαφανίζει το άτιμο ! Πέφτουν κορμιά σου λέω ! κι εσύ έχεις μεσάνυχτα ;;
• ... Κι ο σκύλος μου, που σε βρήκε ; που έπεσες ;;-- ρώτησα ντροπιασμένη, αλλάζοντας τάχα κουβέντα.
• Στην αυλή της Πελαγίας έπεσα,-- είπε σιγανά – μα ο άντρας της τάχε πιει τα ποτηράκια του και δεν καταλάβαινε τι του έλεγα . Μου φώναζε μόνο
– Πελαγία , σβήσε το φως ! Πελαγία, σβήσε το φως !
• Χμ ... μάλλον θα νόμισε πως είσαι λάμπα έτσι όπως έφεγγες …-- είπα – μα εμένα τώρα ... μάλλον για λυχνάρι μου μοιάζεις ...
• Ναι ..το νοιώθω κι εγώ ..δεν είμαι καθόλου καλά ..
• Ε …μα τι τον ήθελες κι εσύ τον πόλεμο;
• Δεν ξέρω ... ίσως να μην έχεις άδικο ...— ψιθύρισε
• Μάαααλισταααα ... κι εγώ ... τι πρέπει να κάνω τώρα ;;.... πως θα σε γιατρέψω ..— το ρώτησα
Δεν μου απάντησε ... Είχε εξαντληθεί ... Άπλωσε το λιγοστό του φως στον καναπέ μου και μου φάνηκε πως αποκοιμήθηκε ... Άραγε να αναπνέουν τ’ αστέρια ; ... Άπλωσα το χέρι ... Αν αναπνέουν, θα πρέπει να έχουν και σφυγμό . Κάπου θα τον εντόπιζα ...
Οι μικρές σταγόνες από φως, εξακολουθούσαν να στάζουν στο πάτωμα και το μικρό αστέρι, δεν μιλούσε πια, ούτε κουνιόταν. Φωτορραγούσε συνεχώς ... κι όσο περνούσαν τα λεπτά ... γινόταν πιο αχνό ... και πιο αχνό... Ξεψυχούσε ...
Ένιωθα πως θα πέθαινε ... και χωρίς να το καταλάβω, άρχισα να βουρκώνω. Δάκρυα ... σταγόνες απ’ τα μάτια μου ... πάνω στο μισοσβησμένο κορμάκι ... Τι να κάνω ;; .... πως να το σώσω ;; ...Ένα αστεράκι θα πέθαινε στο σπίτι μου ... κι είχε πολεμήσει κιόλας ... και θα χανόταν εδώ ... μέσα στα χέρια μου ... Το κλάμα μου έγινε αναφιλητό και το δάκρυ ποτάμι, έτρεχε απάνω στο αδύναμο πλασματάκι ... στα μαξιλάρια ... στις φωτοσταγόνες ... που είχαν πλημμυρίσει το πάτωμα...
Θα το πνίξω με τα δάκρυα ! ... – σκέφτηκα τρομαγμένη ... κι έκλεισα με τα χέρια μου τα μάτια ...
Όταν τα ξανάνοιξα, νόμιζα πως είχε ξημερώσει ...Φως παντού ... στο δωμάτιο ... στον καναπέ ... στα κάδρα ... στα παράθυρα ...
Το αστεράκι μου άστραφτε ... Πανέμορφο, λαμπερό ... μου χάιδευε τα μαλλιά, με την πιο φωτεινή του αχτίδα ... Είχε γιατρευτεί ! .... πως όμως ... ;
• Από τα δάκρυά σου ... !!! – μου είπε ...
Με έσπρωξε απαλά προς την πόρτα ... Εκείνη άνοιξε .
Απίστευτο αυτό που έβλεπα …
Ο μικρός περίβολος από το Βυζαντινό εκκλησάκι της Παναγιάς ... που την είχα και γειτόνισσα ... ήταν γεμάτος αστέρια ! ... Κοπάδια ολόκληρα παντού ... Στα κεραμίδια ... στους φράχτες ... σκαρφαλωμένα στα κλαδιά ... στο σήμαντρο ... Παντού !! ... Όλα τραυματισμένα ... να φωτορραγούν και να βογγούν αβοήθητα ...
• Δυο μάτια δάκρυα ... δεν φτάνουν να γιατρέψουν ... τόσα αστέρια ... – του είπα ..
• Το ξέρω ...— απάντησε σιγανά -- ... γι’ αυτό, ... πρέπει να φωνάξεις κι άλλους ...
Κι έφυγε για τον ουρανό.....
Αν ξέρετε κάποιον ... που να αγαπάει τ’ αστέρια ... και να μην θέλει να πεθάνουν ... σας παρακαλώ ... να τον φωνάξετε να με βοηθήσει ... Γιατί ... για σκεφτείτε ... αν σβήσουν εδώ ... στο εκκλησάκι της Παναγίτσας ... δεν θα ξαναλάμψουν ... ποτέ στον ουρανό μας ...

Traduction - grec The big mountain spread out once again its imposing shade over the glimmering lights of my little town. It was an August evening on the eve of the Assumption of the Virgin on the fifteenth day of this month. In a few hours, Virgin’s festive day would see the light here in Peania at the small chapel of the Assumption of Virgin.
Hymettus lying behind, a long, high mountain and half-naked of trees makes your look linger on its white marbles, the small pine trees and on the lit road leading to the cave. Then, raising your glimpse a bit higher... and a bit more... and you are almost touching the sky.
That was also the picture of that evening that a lot of facts I am going to narrate, took place... and I swear to Virgin Mary my neighbour, that everything was real...
So, out there, slightly above the mountain, a few strange little lamps get together at nights, called as stars by the people! They are a lot, a great lot, let alone how rampageous they are! They are forever up to lighting up little fires... quarrelling... who is going to blow up the greatest... and they do not leave the night free to rejoice its darkness!
But when blood boils for good, such a hustle comes upon, that quite a few of them fall down from the sky balconies... and they bump, groaning, on the marbles of Hymettus...
Something like that must have also happened at midnight of that eve. The unexpected August cloudburst had just died away and only the babbles from the hurrying water could be heard making the gully nearby overflow. Through my open window, the scent of the soaked earth was popping in and out just as that of my blossoming jasmine did...
Barely had I fallen asleep when I heard the doorbell ringing along with some unusual sounds on the door.
• Who is it ;
I asked both wondering and annoyed because at that time visitors were the last I would ask for.
• Excuse me... here is the street of Love, isn’t it?
A slight, shy voice… was it childish? What the heck? Was it ever possible for anyone to reach the yard without being bitten by Aeolos? He would even attack ants. Good Lord what was that...
• It is here... but what is the street number you are looking for?
• I don’t know it... a friend dropped me off. Could you please let me in? I am injured..., he replied.
I was really alarmed. Was there really an injured man in our little town, which had always been so quiet and peaceful? I opened the door but nothing was there to see. Just a dim light, there in the geranium pot was coming and going like a small elf.
• What are you dear? – I asked.
• I am a star. – he answered without any kick.
• And how did you get here? Did the cloudburst throw down stars and I didn’t get wind of that? – I asked again...
• It’s a long story cutie... Can you nurse me? I have lost a lot of light... – he answered.
Calling me a cutie, he might have been a boy... as well as a saucy boy... and a star... injured at the top! What a trouble in the middle of the night... and how should I treat an injured star? I wondered.
I looked at the street, in the yard and on the steps. He should really have lost a lot of light... Here and there, everywhere drops of glow... There were spots of the injury even on the door-knob... Poor little star! What a luck he had! Saucy though he was!
• So... come in and let’s see how we are going to put you up... I have never before nursed a star – I told him. –Thank God, my dog Aeolos didn’t have a nose for you to make mincemeat of you...—
• Ouch, ouch! – he groaned – I know your dog... we met... ouuuch... he dragged me here.--
I looked at him flabbergasted... Look at my dog... how high are his acquaintances! He socializes even with stars!
• So where is he now? Where is my cosmo-boy?
I asked scanning with my eyes the yard so as to spot Aeolos in case he had another new trouble in store for me...
• He went to the gully to wash himself away because as he was carrying me on his back, he was covered with my light all over, poor him...
What... a dog! – I thought – As if his friends who were brought in our yard every day were not enough... now he brought me a star... and what a star... an injured star!
Not to mention that the night before he had left me sleepless. How inconsiderate! He pursued the little owlets who had sat on the fence of the yard and instead of them running close to their mother they rushed in my bedroom and rolled themselves in my sheets...
Not that I was bothered but those little rascals left me sleepless till the crack of dawn because they settled down on my bed and they played hide-and-seek... • I have not being given a name yet, I am very young...— he said.

I scratched my head... Out of embarrassment? He was there according to his story… and saw the gallant young man... If that was possible! He should probably have knocked himself badly when he fell... and now he was talking nonsense...
Oh... that was really enough.
• And when did all these take place, you chap? You are such a little baby... you don’t even have a name... and you are telling me that you have been there?
• Aaaaah!!! You don’t seem to understand cutie! The thing with us the stars is that many years go by till we get our names...! Did you think we are some sort of butterflies? ...
• Why dear? What’s wrong with butterflies?
• Aaaah! ... Irrelevant as well you are! Hey... butterflies have a really short life! Oh! Dear Saturn is she a total ignorant?
I swallowed my tongue...
A little, injured star was just teaching me entomology and mathematics! He fell silent for a while thoughtfully and as he was opening up its dim light towards me, he spoke solemnly:
• Godmothers who give stars their names must be cultured... and you are not! No way... forget the baptism... you‘d better be my girlfriend...

• I am at my last gasp of light ... and you keep laughing! – he said in a temper and faded away for a while...

• We had a war tonight – he said thoughtfully.
• What... war? The war of stars? – I let out of my mouth and felt like laughing again...
• No, we were attacked by a cloud.
• What do you mean? – I asked doubtfully...
• I mean that... the moment we had really livened up our fade lights... there came the tough guy!
-- Go away!!! – he told us!
– Why should we, dude??? !!! --- we said – You go away!! Draw back a bit!!!!
--Heeeeeey you... go away – he told us again... and started turning as black as evil he was... and all of a sudden he pulled in and then out ... and set off a cloudburst on our fires!! Sooo...you understand... all hell broke loose! More clouds came then... and brought along a few thunders... and crumbled us all...
I looked at him in surprise. But is it ever possible for clouds to attack the stars… I wondered within myself ……….
• Hey!!! And you the stars were all alone, you didn’t have any allies? What the heck?
• What allies?
• Well how come... a whole vast sky... swarms of stars... and two poor clouds made you lick the dust??? .... what about the moon, isn’t it on your side? – I asked in wonder.
• Weeeell... tell us something we don’t know... I’m right when I say you are not on the case... Hey girl, the moon fights even the night! Have you even seen the stars and the moon keeping close company between them? They fight against one another like you’ve never seen before! We get all together to fight its light... and it keeps fading us away, damn it! Our lives perish and you nothing about!
• ... What about my dog, where did he bump into you, where did you fall down? – I asked in embarrassment making believe I changed the subject.
• I fell in the yard of Pelaghia’s house,-- he mumbled but her husband was on the booze and couldn’t make out my words. He just yelled at me.
– Pelaghia, turn the light off! Pelaghia, turn the light off!
• Hmm... she should have probably thought that you are some kind of a lamp the way you shined …-- I said – but now you look more like an oil lamp to me ...
• Yeah..I can feel it ..I am not feeling well at all...
• Well…what did you want with getting involved in the war?
• I don’t know... it is possible you are rather right...— he whispered.
• Of course ... and now... what should I do? How am I supposed to cure you? — I asked him.
He didn’t answer back to me... He was exhausted...he laid his slight light on my sofa and he seemed like having fallen asleep... I wonder if stars can breathe... I stretched my hand... If they can breathe, they should have a pulse, too. I would spot it somewhere...
The little drops of light kept dripping on the floor and the little star was no longer talking, neither moving. He was at his last gasp of light on end... and as minutes were passing by... he went dimmer and dimmer... He was breathing his last...
I felt he was almost dying... and no sooner had I realized it than I started getting tearful. Teardrops running down my eyes... on his faded little body... What can I do? How can I save him? ...A little star was just dying in my house... he had already fought in the war as well... and he was just dying here... in my own hands... My crying turned to sobbing and then weeping with my tears trickling on the weak little creature... on the cushions... on the light-drops that the floor was swamped with...
I will drown him in my tears! – I thought scared... and I closed my eyes with my hands...
When I finally opened them again, it was like dawn had cracked...There was light shed everywhere... in the room... on the sofa... on the pictures on the wall... on the windows...
My little star was sparkling... So divine a beauty let off, radiant... he was caressing my hair with his most shiny ray... He was cured. But how?
• Out of your tears!!! – he said...
He pushed me softly towards the door... it went open.
I couldn’t believe what I was looking at…
The little precinct of the nearby Byzantine chaplet... was full of stars! ... It was full of swarms all around... On the tiles... on the fences... hung on the branches... on the church bell... Everywhere!! ... All of them were injured... losing their light and groaning helplessly...
• Teardrops from two eyes are not enough... in order to cure so many stars... – I told him...
• I know...— he answered silently -- ... that’s why you have to call for more people...
And made his way for the sky...
If you know anyone... who loves the stars... and does not wish for them to die... I beg you... call them for help... Because... think about it... if they fade away here... in the chaplet of Virgin Mary... they are never again going to shine in our sky...
