Le informazioni e programmi di monitoraggio necessari per la salvaguardia delle zone umide si scontrano spesso con le difficoltà create da questo tipo di terreni, spesso e volentieri impenetrabili. La tecnologia satellitare si è dimostrata la soluzione al problema. Le zone umide (paludi, pantani, torbiere, distese di acqua, ecc.) contribuiscono alla nostra esistenza in molti modi: forniscono cibo ed acqua, regolano i fenomeni alluvionali, ci proteggono dalle tempeste e sono l'ambiente ideale per la proliferazione delle biodiversità; ultimamente, però, stanno subendo un progressivo degrado il quale, oltretutto, si sta verificando su grandissima scala.
Gli ambienti umidi permettono anche lo sviluppo di piante che trovano nel terreno bagnato la propria fonte di sostentamento. Una vegetazione del genere evita che le aree in questione siano costantemente coperte d'acqua, favorendo la nascita di ambienti naturali quali paludi, torbiere, foreste di mangrovie, distese umide, stagni, ecc.
In questo contesto, l'ESA ha portato avanti, dal 2003 fino al 2008, il progetto GlobWetland, allo scopo di dimostrare come l'utilizzo della tecnologia satellitare possa supportare la catalogazione, il monitoraggio e la conoscenza approfondita degli ecosistemi delle zone umide del pianeta. Il progetto viene sostenuto dalla Ramsar Convention, un trattato internazionale per la salvaguardia di questi luoghi.
L'ESA ha recentemente pubblicato i risultati del progetto durante la conferenza "Healty wetlands, healty people" che si è tenuta in Corea del Sud.
Translation - English The importance of satellites for the conservation of marshes
Monitoring programs and information needed for the safeguarding of wetlands are often hampered by the difficulties created by this type of terrain, which is commonly impenetrable. Satellite technology has demonstrated the solution to this problem. Wetlands (marshes, bogs, swamps, expanses of water, etc.) contribute to our existence in many respects: they provide food and water, regulate alluvial phenomena, protect us from storms, and are the ideal environment for the proliferation of biodiversity. Recently however, they are undergoing a steady degradation, which, furthermore, is happening on a massive scale.
Wet environments also allow the development of plants that find sustenance on wet soil. This type of vegetation prevents the areas in question from becoming permanently covered in water. This favours the emergence of natural habitats such as marshes, bogs, mangrove forests, wet areas, ponds, etc.
In this context, ESA has carried out the GlobWetland project, from 2003 until 2008, with the aim of demonstrating how the use of satellite technology can facilitate the monitoring, cataloguing, and a deeper knowledge, of the planet’s wetland ecosystems. The project is supported by the Ramsar Convention, an international treaty for the protection of these areas. ESA has recently published the results of this project during the “Health wetlands, healthy people” conference, which was held in South Korea.
