Hello everyone

Does anyone know how much bandwidth WFA consumes? I mean, if you're on an expensive mobile connection, for example. Not including the initial file upload and/or eventual file download.

Wordfast Anywhere relies on Ajax, like Gmail. It therefore doesn't have to move a lot of data back and forth and should be rather efficient (like Gmail). If you're concerned about it, the best would be to try it on a plan that doesn't cost much. Yes, I suppose you're right.

Anyway, I used Chrome's bandwidth meter for a very short test (simply visit chrome://net-internals/#bandwidth in the browser), and I found that loading WFA takes about 1000 KB, and after that it takes about 2 KB per segment that you move forward (no matches displayed). WFA also consumes about 1 KB per minute for being idle (roughly 0.1 KB per 5 seconds).

I speculate that bandwidth usage will be higher if WFA also displays memory matches or other information, and possibly also for double-byte languages (?).

I guess the problem is not the bandwidth, but the data volume, as you mentioned the "expensive mobile conection". Samuel answered the question.

As your question is related to mobile use, with those data volumes as Catalina says the problem will never be bandwidth there is so little data that any speed should be able to handle it no problem. Also as the data volume measurements you mention are so low I doubt you could ever run out of data in your plan just by using WFA.

If you have a 1GB data plan (bearing in mind this will be 1 million kb and not 1048576 kb) and your measurements show WFA using 1000 kb to start and 5 kb per segment (2 kb for the segment itself and I am assuming 3 minutes of "idle" time to write each segment), that would mean in theory you could do the following amounts of translation sessions (i.e. you would use the initial 1000 kb each time)

100 segments 666 sessions
500 segments 285 sessions
2000 segments 91 sessions

And in a single session you could translate nearly 200k segments.

So even adding data for displaying memory matches and double-byte languages should not make any noticeable difference. ▲ Collapse
