Hello all,

I have started a new job as project manager. The documentation we will need to translate is written in Markdown and the software uses .YML resource files that need translation.

Is there a CAT tool that handles Markdown files and .YML files?

Markdown is a text format that uses special syntax to tag files that are then converted to HTML.
Here is some info about Markdown: https://guides.github.com/features/mastering-markdown/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Markdown
Even though the Markdown files are in text format (Although the file extension is .md), there are some characters that have special meaning (Like the #, > etc) , so If the syntax is altered, and those special characters that create the syntax are removed, it will not be possible to generate the output HTML.

Yml files are software files (Ruby on rails). These files can also be opened in a text file. However, in .yml files the number of white space before a string has a special meaning, so I am trying to find a cat tool that can safeguard from a translator inadvertently changing it. This format also uses # and other symbols as part of the syntax.

Thank you,

Alexandra

OmegaT for Markdown Feb 3, 2017

There is a Markdown filter for OmegaT:
https://github.com/miurahr/omegat-markdown-plugin
...but I have no idea how good it is. Remember, the fact that a CAT tool has a filter for a certain format does not mean that the filter fully supports the entire format.

As mentioned "This is an incomplete implementation of OmegaT plugin which support Markdown document for translation."

Remember, the fact that a CAT tool has a filter for a certain format does not mean that the filter fully supports the entire format.

Yes.

In some cases, you get better results with the text filter (supposing the translator knows how to deal with markup commands).

Create you own filter Feb 22, 2017

Create a personalized filter based on your content. Not too hard to do in MemoQ.

Now, this is not job for a project manager - talk to your L10n engineer.

Hi everyone,

Ha, ha! I am the only localization person at the company, no engineers! Only me, that's why I get to do this research.

Update on Markdown translation Saas platforms Apr 12, 2018

HI liuall,

After my research on several tools, I ended up using 2 products: Crowdin and Qordoba.
Crowdin is free for Open source projects and you can also join as a translator in an open source project and try it out. I did this myself, and it was an excellent way to experience how the product works. I highly recommend doing this, because then you will have a much better understanding of the capabilities of Crowdin and whether it will work for you. Some of the things I like about Crowdin is the excellent customer support, and they also have a knowledge base that is useful. The interface is easy to use right away (similar to other CAT tools) and the parsing for the Markdown files is pretty good and stable. The monthly software cost for Crowdin if you decide you want access for your projects, is very reasonable. It's also very easy to get started. You can be up and translating on the same day. Crowdin also has some good collaboration features and the reporting is quite detailed. Crowdin is also designed to be used for crowdsourcing and open source, so collaboration features are very good.

Qordoba is higher in cost than Crowdin. Although, I think they also have a free trial. They have been improving their parser to handle GitHub flavor Markdown. It is similar overall as other TMS systems. The biggest difference is that the software is not specifically designed for Open Source or Crowdsourcing so they do not have all the collaboration features in Crowdin. Also their UI is not as intuitive as Crowdin, but they are constantly improving.

Take care,

Alexandra

Hello,

Just for the sake of completeness, it seems Memsource CAT tool also features file filters for handling Markdown and .YML resource files.

https://wiki.memsource.com/wiki/Markdown
https://wiki.memsource.com/wiki/YAML

As for MateCat, it handles .YML files, among a host of other files, but not Markdown, I think.

https://www.matecat.com/support/introducing-matecat/supported-browser-languages-formats/

Both tools can be used in a round trip scenario...

Finally, Rainbow (Okapi Framework) is an cross-platform application to launch different utilities to help you perform various localization-relate tasks.

It offers filters for both Markdown and YAML files. These filters can be used to create a "pipeline" that uses Rainbow Translation Kit Creation Step to create a (XLIFF or other type of) translation package from a set of input documents, translate the XLIFF in your CAT tool of choice, and use Rainbow Translation Kit Merging Step to merge the files of the package back into their original format. Such pipelines can be saved for easy future reuse.

More products that handle Markdown Apr 13, 2018

Hi Jean,

Thank you for your additional response.

I also want to add a few more tools that I researched last year that work on Markdown, these tools did not work for my project (some of my constraints were that I needed support for GitHub flavor Markdown or a customizable parser plus also a GitHub integration), but they might work for others.

LingoHub
Transifex
Memsource (as mentioned by Jean)
PO Editor
Smartling
GitLocalize... See more
